If you are interested in the TPC, contact Dr. Todd for more information.  btodd@coe.eng.ua.edu, 348-1623.

Every  year at the National Conference, since 1980 -- approximately, SWE holds a Student Technical Presentation Competition.  Any undergraduate member of SWE is eligible to enter.  The competition has two parts: written at the regional level and oral at the national level.

Regional Level: written competition

Five copies of a technical paper must be submitted to the Regional Coordinator (Kerrie Gordon) arriving in her hands by April 1st.  Previous winners at the regional level are not eligible.  The paper must be on work that you have done either as a co-op, in a class such as a laboratory experiment, a research project, or a senior design project.  Generally senior design projects are very well received.

Format:  The paper cannot exceed 10 double-spaced pages plus a maximum of 15 additional pages for the title page, tables, figures, etc.  The standard technical paper format should be followed.  A description of the Components of a Technical Paper can be found by following the link.

Accompanying the five double-spaced copies, a single spaced copy plus the application form--Appendix M in the Student Section Manual must be submitted.

One winner from Region D will be chosen to make an oral presentation at the National conference.  She will receive free transportation (airfare) to the National Conference.  if a UA student is the winner, the UA Student Section will pay for her registration fee.

National Level: oral competition (Washington, DC, June 27-July1, 2000)

The regional winners will participate in a practice session at the National Conference (Tuesday morning) and the Technical Presentation Competition (Wednesday morning).  Presentation are typically 15 minutes with 5 minutes for questions from judges.  All Regional Winners will be recognized at the student awards banquet.  Typical prizes are 1st place: $1500; 2nd place: $1000; 3rd place: $750.  More information will be available to the regional winner.  You will also have the opportunity to invite recruiters from the Career Fair to hear your presentation.
