This is the beginning of the end of the operation for the day. The
snap above shows the molten metal being poured into the dowsprue of the second mold.
These "moon suits" the guys are wearing afford protection against molten metal
splatter in the event of an accidental spill. Proper saftety procedures must be
followed at all times.
 |
The photo
at left shows the crucible containg the molten metal. Not very exciting to look at,
but the induction furnace heats the molten metal to over 700C. |
Here
the fellows are removing the crucible from the furnace. Jon, the chap on the left,
is clamping the crucible into its cradle on the crane. Chris, the fellow on the
right, operates the crane under the instruction of the metal-pourer, Brian, who can be
seen in the rear of the photo. |
 |
 |
After the
crucible is out of the furnace, the temperature of the melt is closely monitored to insure
pouring at a consistent temperaure. Here Jon (in the background) is measuring the
temperature of the molten aluminum in the crucible with a long probe. A thermocouple
device provides the temperature reading. |
