We are determining the  heat transfer from aluminum castings with a simple plate geometry. We measure only the temperature histories in the sand mold and use inverse methods to compute the heat flux from the metal to the mold.

The steps we take for each plate casting are:

bulletPrepare sand for instrument packs and the mold
bulletPrepare instrumentation packs for installation into the mold
bulletIntegrate instrument packs into the mold
bulletFinish packing the mold
bulletPour molten metal into mold
bulletRecord temperature histories in mold with digitial data acquisition
bulletMeasure actual position of thermocouple sensors in the mold after the casting has cooled
bulletUse inverse methods to compute the surface heat flux from the casting
